Frequently Asked Questions
I work with adults aged 18 and older in individual therapy. You may be seeking support with anxiety, difficult experiences, relationship concerns, emotional responses or a change in your life. You do not need to be in a crisis or have a diagnosis to begin. I do not offer couples therapy. If relationships are part of what brings you here, we can explore your experiences, communication, boundaries and patterns within your individual sessions.
I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, relationship concerns, life transitions and everyday challenges. This also includes confidence, self-doubt, self-esteem, communication, perfectionism, people-pleasing and your relationship with yourself.Trauma care, somatic work and nervous system regulation are a particular focus of my practice. We can explore feeling constantly on edge, shutting down or feeling disconnected, difficulty processing emotions and the patterns that keep repeating in your life. The work is shaped around your needs and what you want to change.
Yes. When you choose, we can explore how Muslim identity, Islamic values, family expectations and cultural experiences relate to your emotional wellbeing, guided by your needs and preferences. I provide psychotherapy and do not answer religious questions, provide religious rulings or give fatwas. You are equally welcome to focus on other parts of your life, and you do not need to be Muslim to work with me.
Yes. All sessions are virtual, through a secure video platform, so you can join from home, your office or wherever you have privacy. Choose somewhere you can speak freely, with a reliable internet connection and as few interruptions as possible. Your privacy and comfort matter, so please let me know if there are practical concerns about attending online. We can discuss these before you begin.
Tap Book here on any page to view availability and book a consultation or your first individual therapy session through the online booking system. A consultation is optional: it gives us a brief opportunity to discuss what you are looking for and whether working together feels like a good fit. If you are ready to begin, you are welcome to book your first session directly. No referral is needed to work with me. If you plan to use insurance, check whether your provider requires a referral for reimbursement.
The 10-minute Initial Consultation is a brief call where we talk about what brings you to therapy, your expectations and my approach. You can ask questions and decide whether working together feels right for you. The fee is $50 CAD and is non-refundable. If you go on to begin therapy, it is credited toward your first psychotherapy session.
All fees are in Canadian dollars, and payment is accepted by e-transfer, Visa, AMEX and Mastercard. Psychotherapy usually isn’t covered by public health plans. Many workplace benefit and private insurance plans cover sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist. Please confirm your coverage and limits before booking.
Our first session is a chance for me to get to know you and understand what has brought you to therapy. We’ll talk about your concerns, relevant parts of your background and what you would like to change. Together, we’ll begin setting goals and deciding how our work can support you. You don’t need to share everything at once or have a clear explanation for how you feel. There is room to ask questions and take the conversation at a pace that works for you.
No. You can book directly through my online booking system without a referral from your family doctor. If you plan to use insurance, check whether your policy covers services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist and whether your insurer requires a referral. Coverage and reimbursement requirements vary between plans. Checking these details before your first appointment can help you make an informed decision about starting therapy.
I provide virtual individual psychotherapy for adults in 50-minute sessions. I also offer Professional Consulting for clinicians, organisations and community groups on trauma-informed, culturally responsive and faith-sensitive care. If you'd like to talk before starting therapy, you can book a 10-minute Initial Consultation. Session details and fees are listed on the Services page.
Professional Consulting is a separate service for clinicians, organisations, schools, workplaces and community groups. We might talk through how to support Muslim clients with cultural and faith sensitivity, bring trauma-informed practice into your work, or plan a workshop on burnout, emotional wellbeing or family dynamics. Consulting isn't therapy and doesn't create a therapy relationship, and it's different from the 10-minute Initial Consultation for new therapy clients. The fee is $325 CAD. Please email info@alampsychotherapy.com to arrange a consulting appointment.
My approach is client-centred, trauma-informed and integrative, with care for your cultural background. Depending on what you need, our work may draw on Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), attachment-based and somatic approaches, IFS-informed work, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness and Solution-Focused Therapy. We choose what is useful for your needs and goals, with room to understand emotions, relationship patterns and how your nervous system responds to stress.
Individual psychotherapy sessions are 50 minutes. Meeting weekly at the beginning is often helpful for getting to know each other and building continuity in our work. As your needs change, we may decide to space appointments further apart. We’ll discuss a frequency that takes your goals, circumstances and preferences into account, and review it together as we go. The Initial Consultation is a separate 10-minute conversation to help you decide whether my approach is a good fit.
My own experience of therapy is part of why I do this work. Trauma-focused therapy brought meaningful relief, but Islam and my relationship with Allah often felt separate from the process. That experience shaped my wish to offer a space where clients can speak about all of their lives, including the parts that are difficult to explain. My experience informs my perspective, while our sessions remain centred on you: your circumstances, your values and what you want from therapy.
I’m a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). I hold an MA in Counselling Psychology, a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Toronto and a Diploma in Social Service Work, and I’m currently pursuing doctoral studies in clinical psychology. My specialized training includes trauma therapy (CCTS-I training), Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), the Gottman Method (Level 1 completed, Level 2 in progress) and Mental Health First Response Training. I also hold a Taleem al-Qur’an diploma and an ijazah in Qur’anic recitation. That background helps me understand the spiritual and cultural experiences that matter to many Muslim clients, and it’s part of our work only when you’d like it to be. You can read more on the About page.
Confidentiality is central to our work. I take care to keep the information you share private and secure, in line with my professional responsibilities. There are limits to confidentiality, including certain situations involving a serious risk of harm or disclosure required by law. Before therapy begins, we’ll review these limits and how your information is handled. You are welcome to ask questions about privacy at any point, including during your consultation.
Choose a private space where you can speak comfortably, check your internet connection and have headphones nearby if they help with privacy. You may want to note a few thoughts, feelings or situations you would like to discuss. Between sessions, it can be useful to reflect on what has changed, what has felt difficult and any questions that have come up. There is no need to prepare a script. If you’re unsure where to start, we can work that out together.
Please give at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Appointments changed with less than 48 hours’ notice, and missed appointments, are charged the full session fee.
This practice does not provide emergency or crisis services. If you are in immediate danger or need urgent medical care, call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department. In Canada, if you’re thinking about suicide or worried about someone, you can call or text 988, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, any time.
